What is Pewter
Also known as “repousse” or “metal embossing”, Pewter is an ancient art that dates back to the 1700's, used by the Romans and many Eastern countries.
You do not have to be artistic to create beautiful masterpieces for your home, or as personalized gifts for friends and family.
It is one of the most versatile crafts that is easy to learn and most importantly, a very enjoyable and rewarding hobby.
Pewter pieces are created by using a malleable sheet of lead-free pewter and engraving or raising the sheets with specialized tools. It is then blackened and polished to create the required shadows and depth. The pewter sheets are easy to use and can be cut without the need for specialised equipment. Any artwork can be used as a template to create your masterpiece. An open mind and new ideas is all it takes to make a pewter product. The possibilities are endless.
Pewter Tree was created as an opportunity for Sydney to take on a new and exciting hobby.
I first came to know what pewter was from my mother, as she learned her skills from a close family friend, an expert in pewter arts and crafts. It did not take long to learn the art of pewter and the ability to create personalised and creative items as gifts for her or for her own home. “The apple does not fall far from the tree”
Upon moving to Sydney, I realised that there was no such craft here and felt that it was a great chance to get the art of pewter available to fellow hobbyists who can enjoy the art as much as I do.
My sister - another pewter fanatic - and I both live in Sydney and love that we can open up a world of possibilities with the amazing art of manipulating metal. It is an exciting adventure that we are taking on (with the guidance and experience of our mother), and just wish that we can show everyone that pewter is a craft like no other and can be enjoyed and appreciated by everyone.
We run beginner and intermediate workshops every few months. Register your interest by filling in the Contact Us form or follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/pewtertree to find out when the next course will be.
